BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS OF NORTHERN SIERRA

Since 1977, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northern Sierra (now serving all of El Dorado, Nevada and parts of Placer counties) has operated with the belief that every child has potential and the ability to succeed and thrive in life if given the opportunity. As the nation’s largest donor and volunteer supported mentoring network, BBBS makes meaningful, monitored matches between adult volunteers (“Bigs”) and children (“Littles”), ages 3 through 18. BBBS serves the most vulnerable children, as a result of poverty, living in foster care, having an incarcerated parent, living in a single parent or guardian home, or those who may experience or may be subjected to factors contributing to mental illness. BBBS develops positive relationships that have a direct, and lasting effect on the lives of young people.

The Big Brothers Big Sisters Mission is to build and support one-to-one mentoring relationships that ignite the power and promise of youth.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONS

COMMUNITY BASED MENTORING

Professionally screened adult volunteers are carefully matched with at-risk youth. Big Brothers and Big Sisters serve as positive role models and develop a lasting relationship with their Littles. Together they enjoy fun activities and explore new life opportunities.

SITE BASED MENTORING

Bigs and Littles meet one-to-one on the playground, in the classroom, school library, school computer room, neighborhood computer center or another location. Bigs and Littles typically read together, play sports or computer games, or simply talk about life.

BEYOND SCHOOL WALLS

Beyond School Walls is a version of Big Brothers Big Sisters’ classic one-to-one mentoring program. Beyond School Walls is unique in that students from a local school meet with their mentors at their workplace. Children in these programs not only have a new adult friend and role model, but are also exposed to a positive work environment – something they may never have experienced before.

SPORTS BUDDIES

The Sports Buddies program provides mentoring for many youth who are currently on our waiting list by providing unique opportunities to participate in sports with a kind and caring adult role model. While still a one-to-one mentoring program, Sports Buddies will also offer additional structure and guidance in a group setting, as matches participate in sporting events together with a professional BBBS program manager.

BIGS IN BLUE

The Bigs in Blue program is an opportunity for officers to build meaningful relationships with the area’s most vulnerable youth who may view police officers as a “threat” more than a “friend”. Uniformed officers mentor an elementary or middle school student during the student’s lunch period. Together, they can eat lunch, play games, read, work on homework, or just sit and talk. The children learn to trust the officers in their community and know they are there to help in times of need.

PALS/LumiPals

The PALS utilizes high school students and older volunteers to mentor younger children who are in elementary and junior high school. The mentors develop relationships with the children and encourage social/emotional learning as well as literary skills.
